VMS board hire — variable message signs for works and events
A VMS board is a trailer-mounted electronic sign — a full-matrix LED display that tells road users what's ahead before they reach it. Road works 2 km ahead, left lane closed, detour via Springs Road, event parking next right. It's the difference between drivers arriving at your worksite informed and drivers arriving at your worksite surprised — and surprised drivers are how sites get dangerous.

What VMS boards are actually for
- Advance warning of works. Drivers get the message before the taper, not at it. On higher-speed roads, that early warning is doing real safety work.
- Detour and closure messaging. Route changes, night closures, "use alternative route" — the board carries the information static signs can't fit.
- Event traffic. Parking directions, expected delays, exit routing after the event. Christchurch's event season and summer roadworks programme hit the same months, which is why event bookings need to go in early.
- Speed advisory. With a radar add-on, boards display approach speeds or speed-feedback messaging around the site.
- Private-property messaging. Advertising or information displays on private land — but see the colour rule below.
One boundary worth knowing: a VMS board supplements your TTM signage; it doesn't replace the required signs and devices in the approved layout. The TMP still stands on its own if the board goes dark.
Sizes, mounting and power
NZ hire fleets run two broad size classes, and we match the class to the road environment:
- Compact boards — urban work, tight berms, space-limited sites and spots with higher wind exposure. Easier to position and tow, sized for city speeds.
- Large boards — highway and high-speed work, where the message has to be read at distance and speed.
Both classes are trailer-mounted and solar-powered with battery storage, so they run unattended for the length of a normal hire without a generator or a power lead. Light-sensor auto-dimming keeps the display readable at night without dazzling drivers. Message updates are done remotely — SMS or web — so a changed detour route or updated date doesn't require a site visit, just a text.
The messaging rules (they're stricter than people think)
On public roads, a VMS board is a traffic control device, not a billboard:
- Messages follow the TMP. What's displayed has to be consistent with the approved TMP and the road controlling authority's expectations — not whatever marketing thought up on Friday. If the TMP or RCA specifies the message set, that's what runs.
- Amber is the approved colour for public-road TTM. Full-colour boards exist, but colour displays are for private property and event use — public-road traffic management messaging runs amber.
- Positioning is part of compliance. A board on the road reserve sits behind delineation or barrier protection, positioned so it informs drivers without becoming the hazard.
- Approvals sit with the RCA. NZTA approves state-highway use; councils approve local roads. The same approval chain as the rest of your TTM — which means the usual rule applies: no approved TMP, no compliant setup, and a qualified STMS in control of the site at all times.

Book early for events — genuinely
This isn't sales pressure; it's calendar physics. Canterbury's event season — stadium fixtures, show week, street festivals — lands in the same months as the summer roadworks programme, and every contractor and event organiser in the region wants the same finite pool of VMS boards at once. The hirers who get boards in November booked them in August. If your event date is fixed, your booking window isn't.

Can I put any message I want on a hired VMS board?
On a public road, no. Messages must be consistent with the approved TMP and the road controlling authority's requirements, and amber is the approved display colour for public-road traffic management. How is the message changed once the board is on site?
Remotely — by SMS or web update, so a changed date, route or detour doesn't need a site visit. We set up access and the approved message list at handover. On public roads, changes still have to stay within what the TMP and RCA allow; remote update changes the convenience, not the rules.
How far ahead should I book a VMS board for an event?
As early as you can confirm dates. Canterbury's event season overlaps the summer roadworks programme, and VMS boards are the first hire item to run out across every supplier in the region at once. For a fixed-date event, booking months ahead is normal practice — booking the week before is a gamble.
